Submission Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in writing for gf • planet. We value the work of writers immensely. In general, we are looking for articles that fit into the following categories:

1. News Worthy

Timely pieces about Celiac Disease in the news—treatments, tests, legislation, new findings/statistical information, etc—and what the greater implication is. These articles should report on the facts of the event/issue as well as contextualize why it is important to the Celiac Community. A good example would be when the church issued an edict saying that communion wafers must be made of wheat and a substitution could not be made when receiving communion. How does this affect the spiritual lives of catholic Celiacs? 1200-1800 words.

2. Profiles

Give us a window into someone’s life. We’re interested in people with Celiac Disease who are accomplishing important and interesting things. Know a Celiac who just won a triathalon? A Celiac on Capitol Hill? A Celiac working to improve his/her community? Their accomplishments do not necessarily have to be Celiac related; we want to shine a light on individuals whose lives are a reflection of the fact that Celiacs can do anything. 800 words.

3. Alternatives

gf • planet supports alternatives to the conventional medical way of testing for and treating Celiac Disease. We are looking for articles that present other options for people who are dealing with Celiac Disease, be they blood tests (to avoid an intestinal biopsy), herbal treatments to help heal the g.i. tract, energy healing, or anything else that you can think of. 800-1800 words.

4. Personal Essays

This is a forum for your first person accounts of funny, sad, triumphant, deflating, or life-affirming experiences related to being a Celiac. Tell us your stories, or the stories of your family members seen through your eyes. We are looking for writers with distinct voices for this section. 800 words.

You may send either a formal query or a finished manuscript. If you are sending a query, kindly include two writing samples in the body of the email (not as attachments). For all submissions, you can expect a response within two weeks.

We regret that we are not able to pay for stories at this time, as gf • planet is in its infancy and all the good people working on it are doing so as volunteers. It is our goal, as we start to slowly win friends and influence people, to be able to offer payments to writers in the future.
